Elon Musk is building humanoid robots. He is also demanding that human employees sleep on factory floors, work weekends, and demonstrate limitless availability. These are not two separate projects. They are the same project.
The robot is the design specification. The human workforce is the beta test. Work harder. Don’t question. Don’t need sleep. Don’t need boundaries. Don’t need meaning. Just execute. The ideal employee, in this model, is the machine that has not yet been built.
“AI will create more jobs than it destroys.” Said by the people destroying the jobs, to the people whose jobs are being destroyed, in a tone designed to prevent panic long enough for the transition to become irreversible.
Every previous technological transition replaced muscle and moved humans to cognitive work. Agriculture to manufacturing. Manufacturing to services. Services to knowledge. Each transition created new categories of employment that absorbed the displaced workers. The pattern held for two centuries. It is the foundation of the comfortable nonsense that it will hold again.
This transition replaces cognition itself. There is no higher category to move to. The thing that made humans irreplaceable in every previous transition — the ability to think, judge, create, decide — is the thing being automated. Not perfectly. Not yet completely. But directionally, irreversibly, and with accelerating capability.
The people building the tools know this. Every AI announcement, every efficiency drive, every “augmentation not replacement” press release is a narrative management exercise. The timeline is debated. The direction is not.

They are a managed decline. You do not invest in the workforce you are planning to eliminate. You extract maximum compliance, minimum cost, and buy time until the machines are ready.
The comfortable nonsense: the future of work is exciting. New industries will emerge. The market will adapt. Human creativity will always be valued.
The uncomfortable truth: the people making the decisions about the future of work have already decided that the future has fewer people in it. They are managing the transition on their timeline, for their benefit, and the reassuring language about exciting futures is the anaesthetic.
